Gearing up for a busy and exciting time in the Park this summer

Once again the very popular Summer Brass Band Concerts are being held in the park this year as well as being sponsored by Cllr Ralph Pryke and Cllr Asghar Khan local people and businesses have also paid for one of the concerts and as usual there will be raffles and refreshments on offer, now all we need to order is the idyllic summer weather!

The Olympic torch is coming through East End Park on the evening of Sunday 24 June at around 7.00pm It will come down Ivy Street and enter the park at the north gate and proceed down Victoria Avenue within the park and leave the park by the south gate where it will cross the railway bridge and head towards Pontefract Lane and as you can imagine this is already causing much excitment in the area.  Come along and see this unique event for yourselves, bring the kids and enjoy the spectacle.

Lark in the Park is also taking place in the park again this summer on 21 July 2012 at 1.00pm.  This splendid event is thoroughly enjoyed by people of all ages and is building in size and popularity every year.  Further details of the delights on offer will be published nearer the date.

Autumn 2011 at East End Park

Autumn at East End Park is a busy time for the staff of the Town & Countryside Department and this year is no different.  First there was the planning and execution of the bonfire and fireworks display on Friday 4 November which, together with the fair attracted more than 4,000 people to the park on a very wet and muddy evening.

The fireworks were spectacular and after a somewhat shaky start the huge bonfire, lit by Cllr Asghar Khan on behalf of the council, was soon well ablaze and many were attracted to the warmth it offered on a cold and wet evening.  The ground was very churned up by the number of people and the heavy equipment from the fair but once again Tracy and her crew will do their stuff and get the park ready for Winter.

In November the park will be receiving 36 Sweet Chestnut Trees which will be planted along the front of the park, again Parks & Countryside Department will supply a JCB to help with this big job but it is hoped that local schools together with  local residents and Friends of East End Park will be there to help with some of the work and that by being included in this important project young people in the area will feel an attachment to the trees which they will be able to watch grow and develop and change with the seasons.

The White Ribbon Campaign will be held across the city on on 25 November 2011 and East End Park will be joining in.  Men from our area, together with Cllrs Khan and Grahame and Sgt Coultate and others will be there to lend their support to this worthy cause.  The event itself will be taking place centre entrance of the Park at 1.30pm

Earlier this year Friends of East End Park applied for and received £500 from the POCA fund and used the money to buy two banners, one for the Lark in the Park in July and one for the very popular 3 Brass Band Concerts held in the park in the summer but £300 was given to Parks & Countryside to purchase some new rose trees to be planted in the existing rose beds.  These bare rooted trees will be planted during the month of November and by summer we should have a riot of blooms for those who use the park to enjoy.

As you see the park is a busy place in all the seasons of the year with new things to see in each phase.  The colourful autumn leaves are always a beautiful sight and a gentle walk through the park in the crisp autumn air is one of those treats anyone can enjoy.

Come along and see the park dressed in its autumn finery - it is well worth a visit.

The last band concert of the summer of 2011

The last Brass Band Concert of the summer season for 2011 held this Sunday ended on a very high note.

The weather was perfect, warm and sunny with a pleasant breeze, and the band on offer, The Friendly Band of Sowerby Bridge were of a very high standard.

One of the new local businesses in the area, Northern Hospitality Ltd, kindly loaned tables so that a pleasant picnic area could be established and as you can see the whole event appealed to a wide range of local residents.

Some of our guests took shelter from the bright summer sun under the shady trees, others though had fur coats they could not take off but still seemed to enjoy being out in the fresh air and enjoying the exercise.

Once again there were buns and drinks on offer and even free copies of books handed out by the COVEN Cup Cake Book Club.  There was also a raffle to raise money for the Friends of East End Park with prizes donated by local businesses and residents.

The Friends of East End Park are hoping to maintain and even expand the scope of entertainment in the park over the coming year so keep watching this space for more details.

We would like to thank all the residents and friends of East End Park, all the bands and most of all the very hard working and helpful park staff, especially Tracy and Mick for all their help we could not have done it without you!

Even without a Band Concert East End Park is well worth a visit for a walk, for the children's playground and for the sports facilties so take a stroll and enjoy this beautiful Victorian Park in the very heart of the inner city.

The 2nd Summer Brass Band Concert at East End Park was a great success!

The 2nd Summer Brass Band Concert at East End Park was a great success!  For once the weather was kind and the afternoon was warm and pleasant and the rain held off until after the music finished.

The featured band today was the Altofts & Normanton Brass Band who gave an excellent performance of both old standard Brass Band pieces and newer more modern music.

Refreshments were on offer and these together with a raffle raised £23 for the Friends of East End Park.

As well as those who came to the concert the music was enjoyed by a variety of people also using the park from children playing football, people enjoying a Sunday afternoon walk or others walking their dogs.

As well as those who always attend these concerts we were able to welcome some new people and we hope that for the final Brass Band Concert we will be able to welcome even more people.  The next band concert is on Sunday 21 August at 2.30pm and the featured band is Friendly Brass Band.
